How would you define yourself in as few words that you can? Would you define yourself in terms of how you feel, what you do, what you have, your past, present or your future? Henry Blackaby in Experiencing God states that one’s relationship with God is by far the most important thing in life.

The temperature of our love relationship with God determines the healthiness of our outlook in life. But first we need to realize that having a love relationship with God takes time and deserves our best. It has a starting point. John 1:12-13 NLT, “Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God–children born not of natural descent nor human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” It needs time to develop and grow. 1 Thessalonians 3:12 NLT “and may the Lord make your love for one another and for all people grow and overflow, just as our love for you overflows.”

Having a love relationship with God assures us about what we’re made for and what we’re not. We were made to love God. Deuteronomy 10:12: “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” We were not made to accumulate possessions. Matthew 6:19-21, “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

Finally, having a love relationship with God gives us a reliable resource to define our self-worth. 1 John 4:19, “We love because He first loved us.”
