The story of Mary and Elizabeth is one of the great stories in the Bible I love. Mary had just received life-changing news – she would be the mother of Jesus, and she carried it silently as she traveled to Elizabeth. Maybe we’re in a season where something new is beginning in us too – a hope you haven’t told many people about, a change you’re sensing internally, a calling that feels fragile or a fear or uncertainty you’re still processing. This story reminds us that God often begins His work quietly, before anyone else sees it.
Mary went to Elizabeth, her cousin and someone who could understand and support her, and confirm what God was doing in her life. Is there someone in your life who helps you feel seen, strengthens your faith, brings out your joy or speaks truth when you’re unsure. Or maybe God is nudging you to seek out that kind of companionship instead of carrying everything alone?
Mary didn’t go to Elizabeth to impress her—she simply showed up. And her presence brought joy, confirmation, and the Holy Spirit’s movement. You might underestimate how much your presence, your kindness, your faithfulness, or even your quiet courage can awaken hope in others. Sometimes God uses you without you even realizing it.
Elizabeth blesses Mary for believing God’s promise. Maybe you’re trying to trust God in an area where you don’t yet see results. This passage whispers, “Blessed are you for believing—even before you see.” Our faith, even if it feels small or shaky, matters deeply.
John the Baptist leaping in the womb of Elizabeth is such a tender image. It shows that joy often appears in unexpected places. If you’ve felt a spark of joy lately—however small—it might be God reminding us: “I’m here. I’m working. Don’t lose heart.” Joy is a sign of God’s nearness.
