May 4 IFH -- Wisdom in Serving: Beyond the Moment

This month, we’re going into the book of Ecclesiastes. Reading this wisdom literature in the Old Testament can sometimes feel like a reality check after reading it with the book reminding us of the fleeting nature of earthly pursuits. Yet, in its reflections on the “vanity” of life, we find wisdom for how we engage with the present -- especially in our service to God and others.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 tells us, “whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.” Our efforts can sometimes feel insignificant or lost in the grand scheme of things, so this verse offers a powerful perspective. Knowing that our time and opportunities for service are limited and finite, we are called to engage wholeheartedly in whatever task that is before us. Whether it’s a small act of kindness, a commitment to ministry, or an offering of support -- our present efforts have value and significance.

Ecclesiastes doesn’t encourage us to strive for meaningless earthly gains, but instead urges us to embrace the work we have now with diligence. Our work isn't about building lasting monuments in a temporary world, but about faithfully stewarding the opportunities God gives us in this life. Church, let us then serve intentionally, knowing that our labor, when offered with a heart devoted to God, contributes to His kingdom building and reflects His character in a world that needs it. Let us find wisdom not in the illusion of “permanent” earthly impact, but in the intentional engagement of our hands as we serve and hearts as we live for Christ today.

To God be the glory!
