A Mother’s Heart: Faithful, Prayerful, and Devoted
Today, on Mother’s Day, we honor women who love fiercely, pray earnestly, and give sacrificially. Few biblical examples capture the heart of a mother like Hannah, whose story in 1 Samuel 1 reminds us that the strength of a mother begins with her faith in God.
Hannah was deeply grieved because she had no children. Her pain was made worse by Peninnah’s (Elkanah’s second wife beside Hannah) cruelty. Yet she did not let bitterness take root. She brought her sorrow before the Lord. There are mothers today who carry silent burdens—longings, losses, unanswered prayers. Like Hannah, your pain is not invisible to God. “The Lord had closed her womb... And she was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly.” (vv. 5–10)
Instead of complaining to people, Hannah poured out her soul to God. She made a vow—not out of manipulation, but dedication—that if God gave her a son, she would give him back to the Lord. A praying mother is powerful. Your prayers over your children—whether for their safety, salvation, or calling—are not in vain. Prayer is a legacy.
God answered her prayer, and Hannah kept her promise. She gave Samuel to the Lord, not temporarily, but for life. This wasn’t easy—but it was an act of profound obedience. Motherhood often means surrender. Whether releasing control, letting go, or trusting God with your child’s future, the heart of a godly mother holds loosely and trusts deeply.
Samuel became one of Israel’s greatest prophets—not because of wealth or status, but because of a mother’s faith, a mother’s prayer, and a mother’s obedience.
To all mothers today (including myself): God sees your faithfulness. Your prayers are heard. Your sacrifices are remembered.
