Wisdom in Serving IFH: Romans 12:1-8
The world can be demanding, and so in the busyness of life how do we serve effectively? The apostle Paul, in Romans 12:1-8, tells us that true wisdom in service comes from aligning with God's will and discerning our role in the church community.
It starts with offering ourselves as "living sacrifices" (v. 1), “in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,” and letting God transform our minds (v. 2). This allows us to discern God's perfect will for us in our current season in life. It might seem counter cultural, but we shouldn’t jump into every opportunity presented to us, rather, we should seek first God’s specific timing and desire for our service.
Once aligned, we can serve according to the diverse gifts God has given us (v. 3-8). Whether teaching, leading, or showing mercy, each gift is for a specific purpose within the church body. By being transformed by God's will, through discernment, we can serve powerfully in His timing.
Our purpose isn't just to "do good," but to do the good God calls us to, in His timing, with His gifts. In theory, this should prevent burnouts, bring clarity to our efforts, and allow God's power to be seen as we seek His will. So church, serve wisely by offering yourself to God, seek His will, and lean into His calling in His perfect timing.
To God be the glory!
